Mildred Louise Nichols Boyer, 91, of Fairmont, died Sunday, January 20, 2019, at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. She was born March 26, 1927, at home in Fairmont to the late Joseph Francis Nichols, a worker at the Owens-Illinois glass plant, and Daisy Belle Glasscock Nichols. The second-oldest of six siblings and the oldest girl, she grew up on a farm in Mount Harmony. During the Second World War, she moved to Baltimore to support the war effort by working at a General Electric plant. Upon returning to Fairmont after the war, Mildred met her future husband, Ralph Edward Boyer, in early 1946 through his sister, who was also her coworker at Owens-Illinois. They were married April 25, 1946, at the Highland Avenue Church. They moved to the East Side in 1951, where they would raise two daughters, and Mildred would live for the rest of her life. Mildred was an active member of Highland Avenue Church and in the Mary Circle group. She was talented at sewing, quilting and gardening, and commemorated many special occasions with homemade quilts and blankets. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph Nichols, “Buck” Nichols, and Bertha Mae Allen; and her sons-in-law, Robert Albertson and Charles Kovalan. Mildred is survived by her sisters, Mary Ellen Towles and Barbara Ann Jarvis, of Pinckney, Michigan; her daughters Alice Adkins, of Westport, Massachusetts, and Joanne Kovalan, of Bridgeport; her granddaughters: Wendy Booth, of Huntsville, Alabama; Kathy (Matt) Medeiros, of Westport, Massachusetts; Anne (Matt) Kovalan-Santoni, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Sarah Kovalan, of Shaker Heights, Ohio; her great-grandchildren: Jacob (Jaime) Trent, of South Weymouth, Massachusetts; Joseph Trent, of Westport; and Charles Kovalan-Santoni, of Pittsburgh; her great-great grandson Rider Trent, of South Weymouth; her cousins, nephews, and nieces in West Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, and Florida; and her special friends Richard and Wilma Hackett, of Fairmont. Family and friends can call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont, WV 26554 on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m., with services starting at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Micah Blanks officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
