Mary Josephine "Jo" (Shaffer) DeWitt

December 19, 1917 - June 28, 2009

Mary Josephine “Jo” Shaffer DeWitt, 91, of Fairmont passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at her home. She was born in Oakland, Maryland on December 19, 1917 a daughter of the late Jay Camden Shaffer and Dora Selders Shaffer. Jo was preceded in death by her husband Harry Edward DeWitt who died on July 21, 1999. Jo was a homemaker and a mother. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church/Gateway United Methodist Church. Jo loved her home and especially loved spending time with her children and her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She is survived by her five children Joyce Young and her husband Bob of Fairmont, Judy Compton and her husband Warren of Fairmont, Pat Conaway and her husband John of Pleasant Valley, Kathy Mooney and her husband Gregg of Suwanee, Georgia, and Thomas “Tom” DeWitt and his wife Sharon of Morgantown; her brother Bob Shaffer and his wife Sarah of Cumberland Maryland; her eighteen grandchildren Robin Frame and her husband David, Michelle Dyer and her husband Ray, Michael Young and his wife Lisa, Shannon Murphy and her husband Brent, Becky Neel and her husband Greg, Lisa Estel and her husband Mark, Brian McDougal and his wife Angie, Jeff Conaway and his wife Maggie, Jo Marie Bowers and her husband Duane, LeAnne Conaway and fiancé Brian Bauserman, Jay Conaway and his wife Danelle, Mark DeWitt and his wife Christine, Jason DeWitt, Lauren DeWitt, Britt Mooney and his wife Becca, Derek Mooney and his wife Amy, Gina Deaton and her husband Ben and Shane Ardell and her husband Jason; thirty five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, Jo was preceded in death by her brothers Kenneth Shaffer, Glenn Shaffer and Dale Shaffer and her sisters Marion Rice, Helen Hauser and Lois Shaffer. Mrs. DeWitt’s family would like to thank all their special friends, family and Hospice Care for the help, concern and support during the last 15 years. Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont on Thursday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 11:00am with Jeff Conaway, her grandson, officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in Jo DeWitt’s name to Hospice Care, 1408 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554. Online condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected]
