February 20, 1919 - August 19, 2018
Grace B. Vincent, 99, of East Grafton Road, Fairmont, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. She was born on February 20, 1919, in Fairmont, the daughter of the late James L. and Winnie A. Baker. She graduated from East Fairmont High School, Class of 1936, and was also a graduate of Fairmont State College where she obtained her teaching certificate. She began her career in a one-room schoolhouse and finished after 36 years of service at East Dale Elementary. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and used her passion for teaching to serve as the Children’s Director for many years; she helped with Sunday School Programs and Vocation Bible School. She also attended Levels United Methodist Church. She was a proud and actively serving Regent of the Colonel Morgan Morgan Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), and served as Past State Regent, Past National Defense Chairman, and Past State Resolutions Chairman. She was a member of the Fairmont Women’s Club, active at the Cross Roads Community Center, Fairmont State College Alumni, and the State Teacher’s Retirement Association. Her patriotism was visible with her dedication as a poll worker at every election since she was old enough to vote, including her recent appointment as Commissioner for the past primary. Her hobbies included reading, coloring, storytelling, note writing, and square dancing. In her later years, she found joy in sewing, making pillows, table runners, quilts, and specialty gifts for family and friends. Her greatest love was being with family; she loved being a Grandma. Grace is survived by her daughter-in-law Beverly (Toothman) Vincent of Fairmont, her three grandchildren: James A. Vincent and wife Linda, of Oak Hill, Alicia Hill and husband Doug, of Pennsylvania, and Jennifer Millstone and husband Godfrey, of Morgantown; great-grandsons, Ian and Carson Millstone, of Morgantown; along with extended family members Scarlet, Alex, Mohamed, Ali, Elijah, Sara, Keelan, Syler, and Chrissa, as well as several loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Arnold J. Vincent; son, Gary A. Vincent; brothers: Herbert Baker, Earl Baker, Luther Baker, James Baker, and Claud Baker, who passed in infancy; sisters, Edythe Rogers, Ethel Squires, Mary Neel, Mildred Shaffer, and Frances Burns, as well as several loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Family and friends are welcome to call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont, on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 8p.m. and Wednesday, August 22nd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with services taking place on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating. Interment will follow at Vincent Cemetery.
