Audie Herndon, 98, of Fairmont, went to be with the Lord on August 11, 2018. Audie was born on March 19, 1920, in Marion County, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William E. and Margaret M. Smith. Mom was a member of Gateway United Methodist Church in Fairmont. She loved her Lord and Savior and before her eyesight went bad, she read her Bible everyday. She also loved doing the criptaquote and crossword puzzle in the Times West Virginian. She graduated from Fairview High School in 1939, and also graduated from West Virginia Business College. Over her life, Mom worked as a secretary for Ross Engineering Co. out of Washington, D.C., was a bookkeeper for Smith Coal Company in Rivesville, drove a school bus during World War II, and she and her husband had a paint shop and worked for Electronic Control Company. She is survived by daughter Pamela Herndon, brother Harry Smith, and nieces and nephews and their families – Debbie Roe, Debbie Coulter, Tim Smith, Nancy Lowe, Ed Smith, Judy Williams, Richard Hall, Susie Bratton, and Tom Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “Dutch” Herndon; three sisters, Katherine Hawkins, Lena Stealey, and Dorothy Campbell; two brothers, Talmadge Smith and Denzil Smith; and a nephew, Robert Stealey. The family wants to thank Lisa Carpenter, Brenda Koon, Courtney Johnson, Dr. Ang, West Virginia Caring, Dr. Hadrych, Peggy Musgrove, and Central West Virginia Aging. Family and friends are welcome to call Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont, on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from 3 p.m. to 8p.m., and Wednesday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with services taking place on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Reverend Alice Keener Hocking and Pastor Tim Edin officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
